On Friday 30th August 2013, 45 participants came together at Knockhill Racing Circuit to take on the Cycle the World Challenge. What initially started in 2012 as a 24hr cycle challenge, this year incorporated a 6hr and 12hr category. With solo riders and teams of 4, cyclists triumphed over the windy conditions to collectively complete 4863.6 miles.
This year brought a nail biting competition between several participants. Doug Wood, solo winner in 2012 returned to defend his title, but found several cyclists this year were determined to challenge him to this. The teams were also fighting it out for the winners trophy with Shankly’s Boys and TRA Cycling in neck and neck throughout the 24hrs.
We were also delighted to see our first women participants this year with a mixed team (The Flying Snails) and an all female team (Spokes with No Blokes). Graeme Obree was there at the start and finish to the 24hr Challenge to encourage and congratulate all the participants on their tremendous achievement.
Once again participants have done extremely well in their fundraising having reached £18,504 with many raising substantially more than the minimum per person and sponsorship still coming in. The money raised again this year will be a huge contribution to supporting children, young people and adults with a learning disability in Scotland.
